Before You Go
Book FlixBus from Bratislava to Belgrade at least a week ahead — morning seats on that route sell out.
Book all train legs on Day 6 (Belgrade–Subotica–Szeged–Budapest) in advance via the Serbian and Hungarian rail apps.
Reserve hostel beds in Vienna, Bratislava, Belgrade, and Budapest before departing — budget beds disappear fast in peak season.
Download the ÖBB app for Austrian trains and MÁV app for Hungarian trains — both support mobile tickets.
Check visa requirements for Serbia if you hold a non-EU passport; Serbia is not in the EU but allows many nationalities visa-free.
Good to Know
Serbia uses the Serbian Dinar (RSD), not euros — withdraw cash at a bank ATM on arrival in Belgrade to avoid exchange bureau fees.
The 100E airport bus in Budapest is the fastest way to BUD airport; the subway does not go to the terminal.
Hallstatt is worth the detour but add 90 minutes buffer to your return — the bus connection through Bad Ischl is unforgiving if you miss it.
Belgrade nightlife starts late — splavovi (river bars) don't fill until midnight, so a late dinner at 9 PM is totally normal.
Bratislava is often rushed by visitors, but one focused night is genuinely enough to see the castle, old town, and get a beer.
Validate your tram/bus ticket in every city — inspectors in Vienna and Budapest fine on the spot with no exceptions for tourists.
Szeged's fish soup (halászlé) is a regional dish you can't get this authentic anywhere else — prioritize it for lunch on Day 6.
