2 Days in the Dolomites — Van Life, Alpe di Siusi & Riva del Garda
Two days covering the best of the Dolomites on a budget from a van base, finishing at Lake Garda. Early May means quiet trails, snow-dusted peaks, and no campground fees — but plan for cold nights.

Before You Go
Check the Alpe di Siusi official site for SP24 toll road opening status, as early May access can vary by snow conditions.
Search park4night.com or iOverlander for current van-friendly overnight spots around Compatsch and Molveno before you arrive.
Verify Malga Sanon and Compatsch hut opening dates for early May — some alpine huts only open mid-May.
Stock your van with two days of emergency food, warm layers, and a cold-rated sleeping bag; May nights above 1,800m can hit -5°C.
Note that wild camping is technically illegal in Trentino-Alto Adige; overnight van parking in lots is the practical workaround — keep a low profile.
Good to Know
Alpe di Siusi in early May is uncrowded and stunning — snow on the peaks, green plateau, no tourist buses.
The Compatsch toll road is the easiest van access to the plateau; the cable car from Siusi also works but won't fit your van.
Molveno is a real overnight alternative to Compatsch — the lakeside parking area is flat, quiet, and accepts overnighters off-season.
Lago di Carezza has a paid parking barrier that sometimes isn't staffed early morning — arrive before 9 AM to save the €3.
Keep driving speed low on Dolomite passes; May means wet or icy patches on shaded switchbacks even at lower elevations.
Carry cash for toll roads, mountain huts, and small village bakeries — card machines are unreliable above 1,500m.
The Ponale cliff road above Riva del Garda is one-lane in sections; vans pass fine but pull into lay-bys for oncoming traffic.
