Good to Know
Book the glacier boat tour at Jökulsárlón in advance — May slots sell out even in shoulder season.
Fuel up at every N1 gas station you see east of Vík; stations get sparse and prices spike in remote areas.
Download the 112 Iceland safety app and register your itinerary — it's free, takes 2 minutes, and is genuinely important.
Weather changes every 20 minutes in Iceland — always have a waterproof layer within arm's reach, not buried in your bag.
The Aurora Forecast app (vedur.is) is the most accurate Northern Lights predictor — check it nightly even in May.
Grocery stores (Bónus, Krónan, Krónan) are the single biggest way to cut costs — eating one self-catered meal a day saves $30-50.
Snæfellsnes is the correct answer for your last 2 nights — it has the variety of the whole Ring Road compressed into one peninsula and far fewer tourists than the south coast.
Day by Day
Arrival in Reykjavík — Settle In & Explore the Capital
Arrive at Keflavík International Airport & Pick Up Rental Car
Most transatlantic flights land mid-morning to noon. Pick up your pre-booked rental (ideally a small 4WD or camper-capable car) — gravel protection insurance is worth adding for F-road peace of mind even if you skip F-roads.
Car rental pre-booked ~$60-80/dayDrive to Reykjavík & Check Into Hostel
It's a 45-minute drive from Keflavík to the capital. Drop bags at your hostel — Loft Hostel or Kex Hostel are both excellent budget picks with great common areas for meeting other travelers.
Hostel ~$40-55/person/nightWalk Laugavegur & Skólavörðustígur Streets
Reykjavík's main drag has great cafés, wool shops, and bookstores. Grab snacks and supplies for the road at Krónan or Bónus supermarket — Iceland's grocery stores are your best friend on a budget.
Free to walk; groceries $30-50 for suppliesHallgrímskirkja Church & Leif Eriksson Statue
Climb the tower of Iceland's iconic church for sweeping views over the colorful rooftops — it's only 1,000 ISK and totally worth it. Best photo light in the evening.
~$7 (1,000 ISK) tower entrySunset Walk at Harpa Concert Hall & Old Harbour
The geometric glass facade of Harpa is stunning at golden hour — walk the harbour promenade, watch the fishing boats, and decompress after travel. In May, the sun sets around 10:30 PM so you have endless light.
FreeWhere to eat
Grillið at Keflavík or airport grab
Eat on the plane or grab something light at the airport — save your appetite and wallet for Reykjavík.
Icelandic Street Food (Tryggvagata)
Get the lamb soup in a bread bowl — it's iconic, filling, cheap by Iceland standards (~2,200 ISK), and the perfect first Icelandic meal.
Golden Circle — Geysers, Waterfalls & Tectonic Wonders
Drive to Þingvellir National Park
About 45 minutes from Reykjavík, Þingvellir is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly split apart and where Iceland's parliament was founded in 930 AD. Walk the Almannagjá canyon rift — it's eerie and magnificent.
Free (parking fee ~$7)Geysir Geothermal Area
Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes shooting boiling water 20-30 meters into the air — position yourself downwind. The Great Geysir nearby is largely dormant but the whole field is bubbling and surreal.
FreeGullfoss Waterfall
A two-tiered glacial waterfall that thunders into a deep canyon — in May you may still catch ice on the edges. Walk both upper and lower viewing platforms; the lower path gets you gloriously soaked.
Free (parking ~$7)Kerið Volcanic Crater
A vivid red volcanic caldera with a teal lake at the bottom — walk the full rim (30 min loop) for the best perspective. One of the few Golden Circle stops with an entry fee but totally worth it for the color contrast.
~$6 (900 ISK)Return to Reykjavík or Continue to South Coast Hostel
If you want a head start on Day 3, push an extra 45 minutes to Selfoss or Hvolsvöllur and stay there — it saves you a long morning drive and puts you right on the doorstep of Seljalandsfoss.
Hostel ~$40-50/personWhere to eat
Hostel kitchen or Brauð & Co bakery
Brauð & Co on Frakkastígur opens at 7 AM — their cinnamon rolls are famous. Buy two and eat in the car.
Picnic at Gullfoss
Pack lunch from the supermarket the night before — sandwiches, skyr, and fruit. Eating at Golden Circle cafés is overpriced for what you get.
Selfoss Supermarket (Krónan) or Kaffi Krókur in Selfoss
If you stay in Selfoss, Kaffi Krókur is a cozy local spot with lamb dishes — ask for the daily special.
South Coast Waterfalls & Black Sand Beach
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall — Walk Behind It
One of Iceland's most unique waterfall experiences — a path leads you behind the curtain of water for a full 360° view. Wear waterproof gear because you WILL get wet. Gljúfrabúi hidden waterfall is 10 minutes' walk north and most people skip it — don't.
Parking ~$7Skógafoss Waterfall & Skógafoss Trail (Optional)
Climb the 527 steps to the top of this 60-meter waterfall for a view back over the South Coast that will stop you cold. On clear May mornings you can often see a rainbow in the mist. The trail continues to Þórsmörk — you don't need to do the full thing, just the ridge for 20 minutes.
FreeSólheimajökull Glacier Walk
A short 15-minute walk from the car park brings you to the edge of this accessible glacier tongue. You can walk to the ice edge for free — or book a guided glacier hike for $70-90/person if you want crampons and ice axes and to go further in. Worth it if it's your first glacier experience.
Free to view; guided hike ~$80/personReynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Iceland's most dramatic black sand beach with towering basalt columns (Reynisdrangar sea stacks) rising offshore. The waves here are genuinely dangerous — sneaker waves have killed people. Stay well back from the water line and never turn your back to the sea.
FreeVík í Mýrdal Village Wander
Iceland's southernmost village is tiny but charming — the black church on the hill (Víkurkirkja) is iconic and you can hike up to it in 10 minutes for a view over the beach and sea stacks.
FreeWhere to eat
Hostel kitchen or Selfoss café
Skyr with granola from the supermarket is the budget breakfast of champions in Iceland — creamy, filling, and very local.
Skógafoss Café or packed lunch
There's a small café at Skógafoss that does soup and sandwiches. Decent quality, fair price by Iceland standards.
Suður-Vík Restaurant, Vík
Small restaurant in Vík serving lamb soup and fish — the fish and chips are surprisingly solid and not overpriced. One of the better dinner options on the South Coast.

Claim & CustomizeGlacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach — The Money Shot Day
Drive from Vík to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
About 1 hour 45 minutes east from Vík along the Ring Road — a beautiful drive through lava fields and with views of Vatnajökull (Europe's largest glacier) growing closer. Arrive early to beat the tour buses.
Drive only — freeJökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Boat Tour
Zodiac or amphibian boat tours run through the lagoon among floating icebergs — some the size of houses, glowing blue and white. The 45-minute zodiac tour gets you right up close to the ice. Book online in advance; May tours do run but with weather caveats.
Zodiac boat ~$60/person; amphibian boat ~$50/personDiamond Beach
Walk 2 minutes across the road from the lagoon to where icebergs wash ashore on a black sand beach — they look exactly like scattered diamonds. Morning light is spectacular here. Spend at least 45 minutes; the ice changes every visit.
FreeFjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon (the quieter one)
Just 10 minutes west of Jökulsárlón, this smaller lagoon gets far fewer visitors and feels more intimate. Walk the shore path — you might have it nearly to yourselves, which is rare in Iceland.
FreeDrive to Höfn & Check In
Höfn is a 45-minute drive east — a small fishing town that punches well above its weight for food (famous for langoustine). It's the best base for tonight and a perfect turnaround point before heading back west.
Hostel/guesthouse ~$45-60/personNorthern Lights Watch (Weather Permitting)
Drive 10 minutes out of Höfn away from the town's light pollution and pull over near the fjord. May is marginal for aurora (you need dark skies, and May in Iceland barely gets truly dark), but early-mid May can still deliver on very clear nights — check the Aurora Forecast app.
FreeWhere to eat
Packed from Vík supermarket
Early start today — prep overnight oats or grab pastries from the N1 gas station in Vík, which is better than it sounds.
Jökulsárlón Café kiosk
There's a small snack kiosk at the lagoon car park — lamb hot dogs (pylsur) are the classic Icelandic cheap eat and genuinely delicious. Get two.
Humarhöfnin (The Lobster House), Höfn
Höfn is Iceland's langoustine capital — this is one meal worth splurging on. The langoustine tails with garlic butter are exceptional. Budget ~$35-50/person.
Return West — Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk Detour (Birthday Eve)
Drive Back West Toward the Highlands
Head back along Route 1 toward the interior. Today you have a choice: loop up to Landmannalaugar (colorful rhyolite mountains, requires an F-road-capable vehicle) OR head to Þórsmörk valley, which is equally stunning and more reliably accessible in May.
Fuel ~$30-40Þórsmörk Valley — Valahnúkur Summit Hike
Þórsmörk ('Thor's Forest') is one of Iceland's most dramatic valleys, ringed by three glaciers. The Valahnúkur hike is a 2-hour moderate climb to a ridgeline with panoramic views of Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and the entire valley — genuinely one of the best hikes in Iceland and not as crowded as Fimmvörðuháls.
Hostel/hut bus transfer ~$50/person if no 4WD; free with suitable vehicleStakkholtsgjá Canyon Walk
A hidden gem near Þórsmörk — a narrow canyon with a waterfall at the end, reachable in about 45 minutes each way. The walls are draped in moss and it feels like walking into another world. Easy to moderate terrain.
FreeDrive to Hvolsvöllur or Selfoss for the Night
Position yourself in this central South Coast town tonight — it's the perfect launching pad for either Snæfellsnes (Day 6-7 recommendation) or a Reykjavík return. Hvolsvöllur has a good hostel (Fljótshlíð Guesthouse area).
Hostel ~$40-50/personWhere to eat
Höfn hostel kitchen or N1 gas station
Gas station breakfast in Iceland sounds grim but the N1 chain does a decent hot dog and coffee combo — it's an Icelandic rite of passage.
Packed lunch at Þórsmörk
No restaurants in the valley beyond the hut kitchen which has limited hours. Bring your own and eat with a view — cheese, crackers, skyr, and dried fruit.
The Nest Bistro or Eldstó Art Café, Selfoss
Selfoss has the best dining options in the area. Eldstó does a great fish stew and cozy atmosphere — good spot for birthday eve dinner.
Birthday! — Snæfellsnes Peninsula (The Crown Jewel)
Drive to Snæfellsnes Peninsula
From Hvolsvöllur, drive north through Reykjavík and up to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula — about 2.5 to 3 hours total. This is the answer to 'where should we go for the last 2 days' — Snæfellsnes is criminally underrated compared to the South Coast and jaw-droppingly beautiful.
Fuel ~$25-35Kirkjufell Mountain & Kirkjufellsfoss (Birthday Hike)
Iceland's most photographed mountain — the arrowhead peak reflected behind the small waterfall is the shot you've seen everywhere. Hike the steep but short Kirkjufell summit trail (about 2 hours round trip) for a birthday view you'll never forget. Hard scramble near the top; poles helpful.
Free (parking ~$7)Snæfellsjökull Glacier & Glacier's Edge Walk
Drive to the tip of the peninsula where Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth' begins. The glacier-capped volcano dominates the skyline. Walk as close to the glacier edge as conditions allow — in May you may need to stay on marked paths. The light here in afternoon is golden.
Free; guided glacier hike ~$80/person if desiredDjúpalónssandur Black Pebble Beach
A dramatic volcanic beach with rusted shipwreck remains from 1948 still strewn across the black stones. The lifting stones (Dverghamrar) were historically used to test the strength of fishermen — try lifting them for the birthday challenge.
Free🎂 Birthday Celebration — Sunset at Arnarstapi Sea Cliffs
Drive to Arnarstapi on the south coast of the peninsula for THE birthday moment: dramatic basalt arch formations, puffin colonies returning in May, Arctic terns, and if the sky cooperates, an absolutely staggering sunset over the glacier and open Atlantic. Walk the Arnarstapi to Hellnar coastal trail (2.5 km each way) with a bottle of bubbly in your pack.
Free; champagne from Reykjavík supermarket ~$15-25Birthday Dinner in Stykkishólmur
Drive 45 minutes north to Stykkishólmur, the prettiest town on Snæfellsnes with colorful harbor-side buildings. This is your birthday dinner town — better options than anywhere else on the peninsula.
Dinner ~$35-50/personWhere to eat
Birthday breakfast from hostel or café in Borgarnes
Stop at the Settlement Centre café in Borgarnes en route — good pastries and the best coffee between Reykjavík and Snæfellsnes.
Packed picnic at Kirkjufell
Eat lunch at the base of Kirkjufell with the mountain as your backdrop. You earned it after the climb.
Narfeyrarstofa, Stykkishólmur
Best restaurant on the peninsula — local scallops from Breiðafjörður bay are the signature dish. Book ahead if possible. This is the birthday splurge (~$45-60/person with wine).
Snæfellsnes East & Return to Reykjavík
Morning Walk in Stykkishólmur Harbor
Stykkishólmur's harbor is magical in the morning light — colorful fishing boats, the Súgandisey island lighthouse (10-minute walk up), and Breiðafjörður bay filled with small islands. Coffee from a thermos up at the lighthouse for the last big view of the trip.
FreeGerðuberg Basalt Columns
A lesser-known but spectacular wall of perfectly hexagonal basalt columns stretching 500 meters — often empty of tourists. It's right on Route 54 heading east and takes 20 minutes to walk. The symmetry is almost unsettling.
FreeEldborg Volcano Crater Hike (Optional)
A 90-minute round trip hike to the rim of a perfectly formed lava crater — fits your hiking profile well. Panoramic views over lava fields to the sea. Only do this if you have energy left; it's not unmissable but it's very good.
FreeDrive Back to Reykjavík via Borgarnes
About 1.5 to 2 hours back to the capital. This is a relaxed drive with the hard work done — windows down, road trip playlist on, good conversation about the week you just had.
Fuel ~$20Return Car / Reykjavík Final Afternoon
If you fly tomorrow, return the car and use the afternoon to walk around Reykjavík properly — the flea market (Kolaportið, open weekends) or browse the used bookshops near Laugavegur.
FreeFarewell Soak at Sundhöllin or Laugardalslaug
Skip the overpriced Blue Lagoon and end the trip the Icelandic way — at a city geothermal swimming pool. Laugardalslaug is the biggest and best, with a hot tub lineup and locals only. Pure bliss after a week of hiking.
~$8 (1,100 ISK)Where to eat
Café Stykkishólmur or hostel kitchen
The hostel kitchen is fine — skyr, bread, and coffee. Save money for the drive back.
Settlement Centre, Borgarnes
Stop here on the drive back — the lamb soup is consistently excellent and the Viking history exhibition is actually fascinating for 30 minutes.
Matur og Drykkur or Kex Hostel Bar, Reykjavík
Matur og Drykkur does modern takes on traditional Icelandic recipes — fermented shark shots if you're brave. Or just eat and drink at Kex Hostel's bar which has a great vibe and decent food.
