Before You Go
Activate a 14-day JR Pass before departing; it covers the shinkansen, Wide View Hida, and Hokuriku lines used on this trip.
Reserve seats on the Wide View Hida Express (Nagoya–Takayama) and Hokuriku Shinkansen as soon as you have your JR Pass.
Book Myoryuji Ninja Temple (Kanazawa) by phone or via their website; it sells out, especially on weekends.
Reserve your Takayama ryokan with onsen at least 6–8 weeks ahead; mid-range rooms with kaiseki dinner book fast in November.
Load a Suica or Pasmo IC card in the app before arrival, or top up a physical card at any airport kiosk on day one.
Good to Know
Late November is peak autumn foliage in Nikko and Takayama — arrive early at any outdoor site to beat tour buses.
Convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) are genuinely good for breakfast and onigiri on travel days.
The Kanazawa Loop Bus day pass (¥600) pays for itself after three rides and covers every major sight in this itinerary.
In ryokan, wear the provided yukata to dinner and onsen — it's expected and part of the experience, not optional.
Japan is still largely cash-preferred outside major cities; carry ¥10,000–15,000 in smaller Takayama and Kanazawa establishments.
Book shinkansen reserved seats for the group of four together — open seats exist but four adjacent ones disappear fast.
For two first-timers, Senso-ji at 7 AM and Meiji Jingu at 8 AM are transformative; the same sites at noon are just crowds.
