Before You Go
Book Machu Picchu entry tickets at least 4–6 weeks ahead at machupicchu.gob.pe — slots sell out fast in September.
Book PeruRail or Inca Rail round-trip train tickets (Ollantaytambo–Aguas Calientes) at the same time as your Machu Picchu entry.
The Salkantay Trek requires 5 extra days minimum — extend to 12 days total or plan a separate trip; 7 days is too tight.
Get altitude sickness medication (acetazolamide/Diamox) from your doctor before departure; start 24 hours before arriving in Cusco.
Purchase a Boleto Turístico online or at the COSITUC office in Cusco on arrival; it covers Sacsayhuamán, Pisac ruins, Ollantaytambo, and more.
Good to Know
Uber works in Cusco city and is safer than street taxis for solo female travelers — use it after dark without hesitation.
Colectivos (shared minivans) are the cheapest way between Sacred Valley towns; flag them on the main road and pay on board.
Drink 3–4 liters of water daily in Cusco — dehydration accelerates altitude sickness and is the most common mistake first-timers make.
Ollantaytambo is the best Sacred Valley base: it has the ruins, the train station for Machu Picchu, and a genuine local town feel.
September is shoulder season — prices are lower, crowds are manageable, and you'll hit dry season tail-end with mostly clear skies.
3–4 days in Cusco before heavy hiking is the minimum for acclimatization; do not attempt the Salkantay Trek without at least 3 full rest days first.
Keep a 50–100 soles cash stash at all times — many colectivos, market stalls, and rural sites don't accept cards.
