Before You Go

Book the Palermo and Syracuse accommodation well in advance — August is peak season and good mid-range places sell out fast.

Check current AST bus schedules for the Catania–Rifugio Sapienza Etna route, as they run once daily and change seasonally.

Reserve Valle dei Templi timed-entry tickets online at parks.it to avoid long queues in August heat.

Download the Trenitalia app and set up an account before departure to buy train tickets without queuing at stations.

Confirm Piazza Armerina bus connections from Agrigento via SAIS or Autolinee Giordano — schedules are sparse and require planning.

Good to Know

💡

Agrigento works best as a base, not a day trip — the temples deserve a sunset visit and two day trips radiate well from there.

💡

Sicily in early August is brutally hot by noon; front-load outdoor sightseeing before 11 AM and rest from 1–4 PM like locals do.

🚇

Public transport covers the main sites but runs infrequently — always check the last return bus time before departing a destination.

🚌

Ragusa, Modica, and Scicli are beautiful but hard to reach by bus from Syracuse without a full dedicated day; Noto is the realistic trade-off.

💡

The Aeolian Islands require at least one extra night and a ferry from Milazzo — they don't fit this 7-day itinerary without sacrificing other stops.

💡

Trapani and Erice are excellent but require a separate Palermo extension or a different itinerary focus — they can't be squeezed in here.

🚌

Keep small change and a water bottle at all times — bus drivers don't always give change and August dehydration is a real risk.
